Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Uganda's smallest park — home to golden monkeys and the only place for mountain gorilla trekking in the Virungas.

Discover Mgahinga's Volcanic Majesty

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda's smallest but most dramatically beautiful national park, covering just 33.7 square kilometers at the edge of the Virunga Mountains. Located in southwestern Uganda, the park is part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area shared with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The park is dominated by three extinct volcanoes — Mount Muhabura (4,127m), Mount Gahinga (3,474m), and Mount Sabyinyo (3,669m) — creating a stunning backdrop for gorilla trekking and golden monkey tracking. Mgahinga is home to one habituated mountain gorilla family, the Nyakagezi group, known for its relaxed behavior and cross-border wanderings.

Beyond gorillas, Mgahinga offers Uganda's only golden monkey trekking experience, challenging volcano hikes, and the unique opportunity to stand on the tri-junction of Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC at the summit of Mount Sabyinyo.

Best Time to Visit Mgahinga

The best time for gorilla and golden monkey trekking in Mgahinga is during the drier months: June to September and December to February. Trails are less muddy, and hiking on volcanic slopes is more manageable.

The wet seasons (March-May and October-November) offer lush vegetation and lower lodge rates, but expect challenging conditions. Volcano hiking may be restricted during heavy rains.

Mgahinga's high altitude (2,200m-4,127m) means temperatures can be cool, especially at night and early morning. Pack warm layers regardless of the season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Plan your volcanic adventure to Mgahinga

How does Mgahinga compare to Bwindi for gorilla trekking?

Mgahinga offers a more exclusive experience (only 8 permits/day vs. 100+ in Bwindi). The Nyakagezi family is known for being relaxed and often stays lower on the volcano slopes. However, Bwindi has more gorilla families and higher permit availability. Many visitors do both!

What is golden monkey trekking like?

Golden monkeys are small, energetic, and beautifully colored. Trekking is generally easier than gorilla trekking (1-2 hours). Once found, you spend one hour watching them leap through bamboo forests — a truly magical experience unique to Mgahinga in Uganda.

How difficult are the volcano hikes?

Mount Sabyinyo (the easiest): 4-5 hours round trip. Mount Gahinga: 6-7 hours, includes a crater lake. Mount Muhabura (most challenging): 8-10 hours, high altitude. Good fitness required, especially for Muhabura. All guided by armed rangers.

What are the permit costs for Mgahinga?

Gorilla permit: $800 (same as Bwindi). Golden monkey permit: $100. Volcano hiking: $80-100 per trail. Permits should be booked at least 1-2 months in advance, especially for gorillas.

How do I get to Mgahinga?

By road: 8-9 hours from Kampala via Mbarara and Kabale. The park is 15km from Kisoro town. By air: 1-hour flight from Entebbe to Kisoro Airstrip, then 30-minute drive to the park.

What should I pack for Mgahinga?

Sturdy waterproof hiking boots, warm layers (it's cold at high altitude!), rain jacket, long trousers, gloves, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a daypack. For volcano hikes, pack energy snacks and plenty of water.
