Mount Elgon National Park
Home to the world's largest volcanic caldera — where ancient mountains meet spectacular waterfalls and cave-dwelling elephants.
Discover Mount Elgon's Ancient Beauty
Mount Elgon National Park is named after the magnificent extinct volcano that dominates the landscape — one of the oldest and largest volcanic mountains in East Africa. The park straddles the Uganda-Kenya border, with the Ugandan side offering the most accessible and rewarding hiking experiences.
At 4,321 meters, Mount Elgon may be lower than Kilimanjaro, but what it lacks in height it makes up for in unique features. The mountain boasts the world's largest volcanic caldera — an 8-kilometer wide crater that offers an otherworldly hiking experience. Ancient caves, stunning waterfalls, and unique Afro-montane vegetation make Elgon a hidden gem for adventurous travelers.
The park is famous for its cave-dwelling elephants that venture deep into Kitum Cave to mine salt, dramatic waterfalls like Sipi Falls (a series of three spectacular waterfalls), and the opportunity to hike Uganda's most peaceful and uncrowded mountain.

Best Time to Visit Mount Elgon
The best time for hiking Mount Elgon is during the drier months: June to August and December to February. Trails are less slippery, views are clearer, and camping on the mountain is more comfortable.
The wet seasons (March-May and September-November) are not recommended for summit attempts due to slippery, dangerous trails and limited visibility. However, Sipi Falls area remains accessible for waterfall viewing and short hikes.
Unlike Kilimanjaro, Mount Elgon offers a peaceful, uncrowded experience. You'll rarely encounter other hikers, making it perfect for those seeking solitude and an authentic mountain adventure.
