Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Home to nearly half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas — the ultimate primate trekking destination.

Discover Bwindi's Magic

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa's most extraordinary wildlife destinations. Located in southwestern Uganda, this ancient rainforest spans 331 square kilometers and is home to an estimated 459 mountain gorillas — nearly half of the world's total population.

The park's name "Bwindi" means "impenetrable" in the local language, and walking through its dense undergrowth, mist-covered hills, and tangled vines reveals why. This biodiverse haven shelters not only gorillas but also 120 mammal species, 350 bird species, and over 200 butterfly species.

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi offers an intimate, life-changing encounter with these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. With our expert guides, you'll trek through the forest, eventually coming face-to-face with a gorilla family going about their daily lives — feeding, playing, and resting.

The Gorilla Trekking Experience

A once-in-a-lifetime journey into the heart of the rainforest

The Trek

Trekking duration varies from 1 to 6 hours depending on gorilla movement. Our experienced guides lead you through dense forest, steep terrain, and magical bamboo zones.

One Hour With Gorillas

Once you locate a gorilla family, you'll spend one unforgettable hour observing them — watching mothers nurse infants, silverbacks assert dominance, and juveniles play.

Permit Information

Gorilla permits cost $800 for foreign non-residents (2025). We recommend booking permits at least 3-6 months in advance due to high demand.

Best Time to Visit Bwindi

Bwindi can be visited year-round, but the best time for gorilla trekking is during the drier months: June to August and December to February. Trails are less muddy and slippery, making trekking more comfortable.

The rainy seasons (March-May and September-November) offer lush green landscapes, fewer crowds, and often lower lodge prices. Trekking is still possible, but expect challenging conditions and pack waterproof gear.

Month-by-Month Guide

Jan-Feb (Dry)✓ Best trekking conditions
Mar-May (Wet)✓ Lush scenery, fewer tourists
Jun-Aug (Dry)✓ Peak season, excellent trekking
